LCEL Earns National Recognition for Inclusion

Lake Carolina Lower Elementary School has been named a Special Olympics Unified Champion School. The banner presentation by Special Olympics South Carolina will be on Thursday, October 10 at 8:15 a.m.

The school will also be included on a list of other schools around the country that have achieved this distinguished status. It’s receiving this national banner recognition for efforts to provide inclusive sports and activities for students with and without disabilities. Lake Carolina also met national standards of excellence in the areas of inclusion, advocacy and respect.

Lake Carolina Lower is among a select number of schools across the country to receive this distinction.

“Diversity and inclusion are among our principal practices in Richland Two,” said Superintendent Dr. Baron R. Davis. “The steps Lake Carolina Lower has taken to ensure that students of all abilities are able to participate in activities is outstanding and life-changing for all students involved.”

More than 300 schools are currently participating in Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools programming in South Carolina, as part of more than 6,500 schools across the country engaged in the program. Special Olympics has a global goal of creating 10,000 Unified Champion Schools by 2020. Boosterthon starts on Monday, October 14 and ends on Friday, October 25. The Boosterthon FUN RUN is just 3 WEEKS AWAY! This program will help our school AND teach our students character. This year, we’re raising funds for a digital marquee, playground sun shades, and more!

Safety in Richland Two

Safety is our top priority at Lake Carolina Elementary. In accordance with district procedures and expectations, we are carrying out safety drills to include: fire drills, lockdown and lockout drills as well as emergency weather drills. Safety drills are conducted on a regular basis in order to ensure that our students and faculty/staff will know how to respond should a situation arise.

We also want to ensure that our students are safe from threats. Parents, we are asking for your help with this. Please take every opportunity to speak to your child about the importance of school safety. Help us encourage students to not joke about school threats or make statements in haste. This includes comments that may be made on social media. These comments, even if made in haste on social media, carry the same consequence.

In Richland School District Two, safety is no joke and no one should ever joke around about causing harm at any of our schools nor to our students, employees, and visitors.

Thank you for your support of our school and Richland Two.

Vision Screenings

According to the standards of school nursing, throughout the school year, school nurses complete screening of student’s vision, hearing, dental, and blood pressure based on recommendations issued by SC DHEC. Some schools collaborate with the Lions Club to provide vision screening. The Lions Club uses the SPOT camera, which quickly and efficiently screens a student’s vision. You may click the link below to learn more about the SPOT camera. If you do not wish to have your child to participate in screenings, please let your school nurse know.
