Shadowing Principal for the Day

Spencer Shealy earned the opportunity to shadow our principal for the day at Upper Campus for being the student that had the highest amount collected during the Read Books 2 Raise Bucks PTO fundraiser. Spencer shadowed Mr. Williams and got to experience what an elementary school principal does!

Kindergarten Harvest Day

Kindergarten students enjoyed learning about apples and pumpkins during their harvest day rotations. You could see the excitement in their eyes as they rotated through the different stations! Who knew that learning could be so fun!

Mother-Son Bowling Night Deadline

National Walk/Bike to School Day

We are excited to gear up for the annual, National Bike/Walk to school day Oct 4th. We encourage everyone to walk or bike to school.We are very proud to be part of a huge walk/bike-to-school community.

This event promotes:

  • Physical activity
  • Teaching safe pedestrian and bicycle safety to children
  • Awareness of how walkable and bikeable a community is and where improvements can be made
  • Concern for the environment
  • Reducing traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools
  • Sharing time within the community with friends and family

Rachel's Challenge at BMS

On October 12, Blythewood Middle School is hosting an anti-bullying and empathy program called "Rachel's Challenge". Some of the LCE students will be moving up to BMS next year, and we would like to invite you all to experience this community event so that you may see what students will have to look forward to. It is a life-changing event that will bring our students and community together.

Rachel’s Challenge is a program created to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. It provides our school with curriculum to use in advisory, materials to start a kindness student club (Friends of Rachel), a sports program called Valor before Victory, and much more!  The program is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Our event will be from 5-8pm at BMS on Thursday, October 12.  We will have food trucks, a silent auction, and raffle! We have over $8,000 in raffle and auction items, including a 4-pack of Disney tickets and a full set of braces donated by Dr. Jernigan.

Kay Banks
My name is Dr. Kay Banks and I am the parent of Kathryn Banks, a second grade student at Lake Carolina. I am submitting this information for consideration to join the SIC. I have worked in the field of higher education for the last 18 years in various roles, currently as a faculty member in the Honors College at USC. I am a SC transplant and prior to moving to Lake Carolina in March, after living in for 9 years. My daughter attended Chapin elementary school and I was a member of their SIC for a year prior to our moving. I assisted the Chapin SIC with a grant application and was a weekly participant in their Chapin Readers program. I view the role of an SIC as significant in providing guidance to school leadership and identifying areas of school improvement. 

Denean Rivers
My name is Denean Rivers and I would like to be considered for membership on Lake Carolina Elementary School Improvement Council (SIC). I am the devoted and proud mother of 5 children. My daughter Paige is a kindergartener at LCE Lower and my son DJ is a special needs student who attends 3rd grade at LCE Upper. My daughter Zoe is in 8th grade at Kelly Mill Middle and attended LCE for 5 years.

I wholeheartedly believe education connects us to community and humanity and we all have an important role. I find honor and great reward in advocacy, mentoring, inspiring, and volunteering.

I have served on various SIC’s in Richland Two for three years and held the position of Chair and Vice Chair. Some accomplishments during my terms include: developing goals and initiatives using data from parent surveys, identifying supportive measures for teachers and students, promoting character development with students with special needs, promote initiatives to support teacher retention, encourage and support positive parent/school collaboration, increase partnerships with community stakeholders, and host SIC signature events.

I am a native of Columbia, SC and a graduate of Dreher High. I attended Benedict College and the Advanced Standing Master’s Program of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. I am a social worker by profession, primarily in the medical field for over 15 years.

My talent and expertise has been maximized throughout the Carolinas and most recently with Palmetto Health Hospital Systems where I serve on Palmetto Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council and Palmetto Health System Quality & Safety Cabinet.

I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Board Member of Southeastern Professional School of the Arts Ballet Company.

It would be my pleasure to give my time and talents to serve on LCE SIC.

Gaurav Sangal
Gaurav Sangal is a Strategy and Go-To-Market leader for Motorola Solutions. He has a background in Engineering, Project Management and Strategy development in the public safety communication and broadband communication industries. He has been working in the field of telecommunication since 2005. He has a Masters in Electrical Engineering from University of Texas at Dallas and a Global Executive MBA from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He has earned the UNC Kenan-Flagler Leadership Development Program designation. Gaurav was nominated for lifetime membership in the National Business Scholastic Honor Society in recognition of outstanding academic performance during MBA. He has a daughter that goes to Kindergarten in Lake Carolina Elementary.

Janice Scott
Janice Scott is a native of Columbia, S.C. She joined the United States Air Force in 1992 as a Passenger and Household Good Specialist. In 1999, she earned a BS in Business Administration from Troy State University Montgomery, AL and was simultaneously commissioned as an Air Force Officer. She was appointed as an Air Force Contracting Officer in 2000. In 2002, she received a MS in Human Resource from Central Michigan University.

Janice has held numerous leadership positions, supervised, and trained well over 200 personnel. While in the Air Force, she led and served on over 15 process improvement teams. Additionally, she has 15 hours of training in Lean Six Sigma. She proudly served 20 years in the USAF managing a plethora of complex portfolios, budgets, and projects valued as high as $1 billion. Janice retired in 2015 from the USAF culminating at the rank of Major.

Janice is the proud mother of two vivacious boys, Jonathan and Gabriel Scott. Jonathan is in fourth grade and Gabriel is in second grade. 

Career Day at Lower Campus

My name is Philip Blackwell, I am the new Career Specialist for Lake Carolina Elementary School Lower Campus. The school counselor, Mrs. Boyleston, and I are in the process of planning our “Touch-A-Truck Career Day” for Lower Campus. 

The event will take place on October 26, 2017 from 8:30am-12:00pm. We would like to invite you to share your career with the students. We want to provide the children with interesting and fun facts about various careers. Please consider participating if your career requires the use of a vehicle or not.

Military Gator Families

Attention Military Gator Families!

Did you know?
Both LCEL and LCEU each have over 100 military connected families! Because of our high Military student population, each campus has received individual grants through the Department of Defense. These grants enable our school to participate in professional development opportunities to help our faculty and staff better serve our student's academic and social/emotional needs. We are also able to provide our classrooms with technology, books, and other resources through this grant.

Sign your child up for our Military Kids Group!
LCE’s military kids support groups are designed to address the specific needs of students with an active duty parent.  We focus on topics such as deployments, frequent family moves, transitioning into new schools, making friends, and more. These support groups meet once a month, during the school day and are led by the school counselors, Mrs. Skinner (upper) and Mrs. Boyleston (lower). If you would like your child to participate and are not yet signed up, please use the links below to sign up at each campus.

Interim Reports for Upper Campus


Interim reports at Lake Carolina Upper Campus will be accessible from Parent Portal this school year. 

If you have an active Parent Portal account, you may check your child's grades each week and Friday, September 22 will be the interim grade for each subject area for the 1st 9 week grading period. When you log in to your account, the grades will automatically appear on the screen. There is not a report tab to click in Parent Portal.

It is important to monitor your child's progress through Parent Portal before report cards are issued. The first grading period ends on October 26 and the first report card will be issued on November 3.

To create a Parent Portal Account:
1. Click Create an Account
2. Complete the top section with your personal information. Write down yourUsername/Password.
3. Add your child(ren) in the fields below. To add student(s), you will need to enter an Access ID and Access Password.
a. Access ID - Student ID number (either 12 or 5 digits). Your child's teacher or the front office can provide you with your child's student id number if you need to create an account.
b. Access Password - Student’s birthday, using 6-digits without dashes or slashes.
Example: MMDDYY - 010104
4. Click Submit.

Inclement Weather Make-Up Day and October School Schedule


Richland School District Two will make up Monday, September 11, missed due to Hurricane Irma, on Thursday, October 19. That means:
  • Wednesday, October 18 becomes a full day for elementary and middle school students and remains a late start day for high school students. Elementary and middle school parent/teacher conferences move to Thursday, October 19.
  • Thursday, October 19 becomes an early dismissal day for elementary and middle school students and a full day for high school students. Elementary and middle schools hold parent/teacher conference on this day.
  • Friday, October 20 becomes a holiday for students. Teachers and other 190-day employees attend the district inservice.

Why now?
  • Scheduling the day now allows us to recapture instruction time during the same semester of the missed day, while giving our families and employees advanced notice of the change in the schedule.
  • The teachers, principals, administrators and executive staff that make up Key Leaders and the Superintendent’s Faculty Advisory Council overwhelmingly supported this plan.
  • State law requires school districts to make up at minimum of three days of missed school before requesting days be forgiven by the local school board.
  • Employees, students and parents have shared that using all the make-up days in the spring is difficult.  
  • It’s only September, and the past two years have not been kind to our meticulously planned school-year calendar (October, we’re looking at you).

Why isn’t one of the three required inclement weather make-up days scheduled in the fall?
When making up missed school days, our goal is to successfully and meaningfully recapture lost instructional time. Therefore, school districts try to schedule make-up days after the months when inclement weather that might prompt school closings is most likely to occur. Otherwise, we have to scramble to find days or add days to the end of the year.

Read Books 2 Raise Bucks Results

Thank you LCE students, families, teachers and faculty for your amazing support of the Read Books 2 Raise Bucks Fundraiser! Because of you, LCE raised over $49,000. We are overwhelmed and overjoyed!

This money will be used to assist our service learning projects, go directly into our classrooms, off set field trip expenses and fund various PTO and LCE programs and projects.

Information on the incentives earned was sent home with students today. If your student achieved the Bronze, Silver or Gold Level, look for an informational email within the next day.

    Information from School Nurse




    As part of the eight components of school health, School Nurses conduct periodic vision, dental, hearing, blood pressure,and other screenings as recommended by SC DHEC, and as needed as part of the nurse's assessment during a health room visit. These screenings are important in early detection of hearing or vision difficulties that may impact teaching and learning. Many times a student is not even aware he/she is having difficulty seeing the board, reading, or hearing classroom instructions. Please contact your child's school nurse if you do not want your child screened.

    Family Fun Night


    PTO Update and News


    LCE is excited to report that we have raised over $46,500 with the Read Books 2 Raise Bucks fundraiser. Thank You!

    Some important things to note:
    • We are accepting donations through the 9am on Friday, September 15. 
    • On Thursday morning, teachers will have a list of donations received through Wednesday evening if you want to contact them about how much your child has raised. 
    • Incentive Awards will be distributed to students on Monday, September 18.  
    • Parents of students who raised more than $150 will be notified how those Bronze, Silver & Gold incentive rewards will be handled. Be on the look out for communication on that early next week as well.

    Family Fun Night is this Friday, September 15. This event offers many free activities as LCE PTO's way of saying "thank you" for your generosity and support through the Read Books 2 Raise Bucks Fundraiser. We have 2 corporate sponsors, Royall Simons Keller Williams Realty and PrimeLending, who made generous donations so we could offer these activities free of charge.  Additionally, they will be offering a raffle to our LCE families. Simply stop by their table (located just outside the PE room as you head out to the bus loop) to register to win one of these fabulous prizes:
    • ​2 ​Motorized Razor E100 Electric Scooters
    • ​1 iPod​
    They are also offering the LCE teachers a separate raffle of two $50 Walmart Gift Cards to be used for classroom spending.

    Disability Awareness Day

    Each year 3rd graders and new students to Upper Campus participate in disability awareness training. The training involves each student rotating through stations that simulate various disabilities. Volunteers run each station.  After the students "experience" the disabilities, their teachers will follow-up with classroom discussions.  

    We even had special guests at a station. Mrs. Woodley and Ross from Lower Campus shared how service dogs help people with different disabilities.



    Thank you to our counselor, Mrs. Skinner, for organizing this for our school and to our wonderful volunteers to helping with this event!

    Due to the 2 hour delay start on Tuesday, September 12, MAP testing will be rescheduled.


    UPPER CAMPUS: MAP Math testing on Thursday, September 14.


    LOWER CAMPUS: MAP Math on Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15. MAP Reading on Monday, September 18 and Tuesday, September 19.

    Fundraiser Continues



    Keeping it Going...

    LCE first grader Katie Moser and second grader Jeannette Hickman spent Saturday morning continuing to raise money for LCE's Read Books 2 Raise Bucks fundraiser. They sold cookies during Lake Carolina's Fall Yard Sale, and are planning to donate the money they earn to their school. They've been planning this for two weeks!


    We're so proud of them for using the 7 Habits of Happy Kids they have learned at school: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, and Sharpen the Saw. They even recruited a friend from another school to help them! Way to go, Katie and Jeannette!

    Friday Fundraising Update

    Wow! At last count we've raised over $43,000 and the donations are still coming in. Individual students, whole classes and entire grade levels continue to enjoy the competition.

    Our current standings are based on data pulled late Thursday night so anything received on Friday is not yet counted.  Additionally, PTO is accepting donations through Friday, September 15 so there's still a chance to affect these outcomes.

    The leading GRADE at Lower campus is kindergarten and at Upper campus 3rd grade is on top. The teachers of the winning grade level will enjoy a half day planning.

    The top CLASS at each campus will get a Cici's lunch party at school. Our leaders at Lower are Ms. Berzins' class and Ms. Weaver's class at Upper campus. However, we have a few classes in hot pursuit of them with very little margin in between so every dollar counts on this one:
    Lower: Mattox, Egan, Hunter, Jackson & Manly
    Upper: Cline, Flores, Parent, Rojas & Bird

    The highest earning STUDENT at each campus gets to spend half the day shadowing the Principal. Leading this at Lower are a few students who've raised $600. Will one of them take the lead?  At Upper we have one leader with $501.

    Next week we will begin to contact students and parents who have earned incentives for raising $50 or more. Any student who has raised over $50 or more in donations will get a certificate listing out what they've earned. The certificate has many details so please take a look at it. Additionally, if your student reached Bronze ($150), Silver ($300) or Gold status ($500+) PTO will be sending you an email with more information about how those things will be awarded. Please stay tuned for those details.

    We can't thank you enough for your support. With donations still coming in, we are confident that we'll finish strong & reach that $50,000 goal. We look forward to celebrating this success with you at Family Fun Night on Friday,  September 15.

    Fundraiser Ends Tomorrow


    Tomorrow is the last official day of our Read Books 2 Raise Bucks fundraising campaign. We have raised $34,000 so far which is AMAZING!​ ​We are so close to our goal of $50,000 so let's finish strong!​

    Approximately 60% of our students have​ already​ received a donation on their behalf​. Thank you students and families! ​If the remaining 40% each brought in a donation tomorrow, we'd hit our goal in no time​.​

    ​Whether you  have given some or none, please consider making a contribution tonight! ​

    ALL students will participate in a "Read In" to wrap up this fundraising campaign and finish up any reading goals they have set. ALL students are invited to wear their pajamas to school to enjoy the "Read In" tomorrow, Friday, September 8.​

    Read Books 2 Raise Bucks uses the tag line "The more YOU give, the more THEY get".  This applies to ​students, teachers, parents and the LCE community as a whole because the money raised will be used as follows:

    • 5% goes to campus wide service learning projects
    • 20% goes to teachers for classroom use
    • 25% goes to off set the cost of field studies
    • 50% goes to school wide needs

    Additionally, there are awesome incentives for you and your student​:

    • Raise $50 to get $3 in Scholastic Bucks to use at Fall Book Fair
    • Raise $75 to get $5 in Scholastic Bucks to use at Fall Book Fair
    • Raise $100 to get $10 in Scholastic Bucks to use at Fall Book Fair

    School Improvement Council


    Our School Improvement Council (SIC) is looking for parents who are willing to work with a collaborative group to generate ideas that will help improve our school. If you are interested in serving on our SIC during the 2017-18 school year, please submit a personal biography by Friday, September 22. SIC meetings are once per month and usually last 30-45 minutes. Please include your name and the current grade level(s) of your child(ren) in your submission.

    There is one SIC at each campus of Lake Carolina Elementary.

    Submit lower campus (K-2nd grades) bios to Cathy-Ann Shannon at ashannon@richland2.org or to the front office.

    Submit upper campus (3rd-5th grades) bios to Jeff Williams at jpwilliams@richland2.org or to the front office. 

    Bios of nominees will be published in The Communigator Blog with a ballot form for voting.

    We are in the home stretch of our fundraiser - - just 2 days left! Thanks to your generosity, we have reached our weekend challenge of $30,000. Wow!! To celebrate this goal achievement, tomorrow students get to take their shoes off in their classroom and PTO is supplying the bubble gum for chewing in class too.

    The classes and grade levels are enjoying the friendly competition of this fundraiser. The class on each campus that raises the highest amount per class/per student gets a Cici's lunch party at school. Help your child's class win this prize!

    Parents Visiting Classrooms

    Parents/Guardians are encouraged to schedule a classroom visit in advance with their student’s teacher/counselor/administrator. The person scheduling the visit should notify the receptionist that works with Lobbyguard.
    • If parents/guardians have scheduled a visit in advance, the following procedures apply:

    1.  Parent signs in with Lobbyguard.
    2.  Parent is issued a Parent Acknowledgement Form to sign if it is their first visit of the school year.
    3. Parent is issued a visitor sticker to wear throughout their time on campus.
    4. Parent is escorted to the classroom.
    5. When the visit is over, parent signs out with Lobbyguard.
    • If parents/guardians have NOT​ scheduled a visit in advance, the following procedures apply:

    1. Parent signs in with Lobbyguard.
    2. Parent is issued a Parent Acknowledgement Form to sign if it is their first visit of the school year.
    3. Parent is issued a visitor sticker to wear throughout their time on campus.
    4. Administrator/Counselor is notified of parent wishing to visit class.
    5. Administrator/Counselor escorts parent/guardian to the classroom and invites them to share any concerns with them following their visit.
    6. When the visit is over, parent signs out with Lobbyguard.

    Upper Campus MAP Testing





    Upper Campus students will take the NWEA MAP Reading on Thursday, September 7 and MAP Math on Tuesday, September 12.

    Please make sure your child is at school on scheduled testing days, has a good breakfast on days of testing as well as adequate rest the night prior to testing. 

    PTO Tuesday Update for Read Books to Raise Bucks

    To wrap up our Read Books 2 Raise Bucks fundraiser, LCE will have a READ IN on Friday, September 8. All students are invited to wear their pajamas to school and enjoy a "Read In" in their classrooms. The goal is to give students time to complete any reading goals that they set for themselves during the fundraiser. Your teacher will communicate details with students this week.

    We are more than half way to our $50,000 goal. Thank You!

    The money raised will be spent in the following ways:

    • 5% goes towards campus wide Service Learning Projects
    • 20% goes to the teachers for classroom use
    • 25% goes towards off-setting the cost of field studies
    • 50% goes towards fulfilling school wide needs such as equipment, supplies, continued education and PTO functions

    We will announce the results of our Weekend Challenge on the school's morning show on Wednesday.

    Additionally, any students who met the Weekend Challenge goal of getting a NEW $25 donation over the weekend will receive their free Cici's kids buffet coupon in class on Wednesday.

    Final Week!

    We are in the final week of our Read Books 2 Raise Bucks fundraiser,
    so lets make this week count!

    • If we reach our $30,000 weekend challenge then students get to be shoeless and chew gum in class on Thursday. 
    • Also any student who gets a new $25 (or more) donaion by Tuesday morning will receive a coupon for a free kids buffet at Cici's. 
    • Tomorrow, students can wear hats to school as a thank you for hitting our last challenge.


    Don't forget, LCE keeps 100% of our donations!

    Read Books 2 Raise Bucks


    Where Does the Money Go?

    Over the last few years, the PTO has used your generous donations to our fundraisers to purchase many things for both campuses, such as playground equipment, sun shades, murals, poster maker, laminator, tables and chairs for large group events, heavy duty electric pencil sharpeners for every classroom, and hundreds of classroom and library books. Additionally, the PTO funds classroom celebrations twice a year, teacher appreciation events, birthday gifts for teachers, family fun nights, Gator Games and other special events. We also give every student a book each year.
