3rd Grade Guest Speaker

Ms. Gervonder Brown, a Charleston native also known as Island Gal, spoke to the 3rd grade students about the history of the Gullah culture. Third graders have been studying the history of the Carolina Colony and how the Gullah language is a mixture of African languages, Spanish, and English.

She taught about the Gullah dialect and words and phrases like "chillun", "ent wut", and "baigum". Ms. Brown also shared Gullah information about the the Gullah/Geechie people, retold Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and the Tar Baby with students acting out the characters, and how to do the Charleston Double and Triple clap to a song that had the lyrics "I done did what my momma told me".
